Gold Vermeil Vs Gold Plated: What's The Difference?

If you’ve ever searched for gold jewellery online, you’ve probably come across the terms gold plated and gold vermeil and wondered what the actual difference is.

The truth is, unless you work in jewellery, the terminology can be incredibly confusing. And unfortunately, not all brands explain it clearly.

At L'ERA Jewellery, we’re often asked why our vermeil pieces last longer than other gold plated jewellery customers have previously owned. The answer almost always comes down to one thing: the quality and thickness of the gold plating itself.

What Is Gold Vermeil?

Gold vermeil (pronounced ver-may) is a type of high quality gold plated jewellery made with:

  • a sterling silver base

  • a thick layer of real gold plating

In the US, there are actually standards around what can legally be called gold vermeil. To qualify, a piece must have:

  • a sterling silver base

  • at least 2.5 microns of gold plating

  • gold that is at least 10ct

In the UK however, while gold vermeil is generally understood to mean gold plated sterling silver jewellery, there is currently no regulation around the minimum plating thickness required to use the term. This means some brands market jewellery as “gold vermeil” despite using plating that is far thinner than the US standard, sometimes less than 1 micron.

This is why we always recommend checking whether a brand clearly states its plating thickness. If it isn’t specified, we’d always question why.

At L'ERA Jewellery, we follow the US vermeil standard and use 2.5 microns of 18ct gold over sterling silver across our collections.

So What Is Standard Gold Plated Jewellery?

Gold plated jewellery simply means a thin layer of gold has been applied over another metal.

The base metal is often brass, copper or stainless steel, and the plating can vary massively in thickness. In many cases, it can be extremely thin, which is why some gold plated jewellery fades quickly or leaves skin discoloured.

Before launching L'ERA, I personally bought pieces where the plating wore off after just one wear. It honestly seemed unbelievable at the time, but it highlights just how thin some plating can be.

Gold vermeil sits between costume jewellery and fine jewellery. It’s often referred to as demi-fine jewellery and offers a more premium alternative without the price point of solid gold.

Is Gold Vermeil Real Gold Or Fake?

Gold vermeil is absolutely real gold.

The outer layer is genuine gold, not imitation gold colouring. The difference is that underneath the gold layer sits sterling silver rather than solid gold throughout.

Solid gold jewellery will always outlast vermeil, but it also sits at a significantly higher price point that simply isn’t realistic for many people.

For us, vermeil bridges the gap beautifully. You still get the look, feel and luxury of fine jewellery, but at a more accessible price.

Does Gold Vermeil Tarnish Or Turn Green?

Properly made gold vermeil should not turn your skin green.

That green discolouration is usually associated with brass based jewellery, particularly pieces with very thin plating that wears away quickly.

Because vermeil uses a sterling silver base, it’s generally much better tolerated on sensitive skin. Many of our customers tell us L'ERA pieces are the first gold jewellery they’ve worn that hasn’t caused irritation or reactions. All of our jewellery is hypoallergenic and free from common irritants.

Like all jewellery, vermeil does require some care. We always recommend avoiding:

  • perfumes

  • lotions

  • moisture

  • cleaning products

  • prolonged water exposure

These small habits make a huge difference to longevity.

How Long Does Gold Vermeil Last?

This is probably the question we’re asked most often.

The honest answer is: good quality gold vermeil is made to last for years when properly cared for.

Of course, over time and under continual friction, the gold layer can eventually wear down. No plated jewellery is completely immune to this. But thicker vermeil plating dramatically improves durability compared to standard gold plated jewellery.

One of the reasons we chose vermeil for L'ERA was longevity. Using thick 18ct gold plating over sterling silver immediately creates a more durable and sustainable product.

We launched the brand nearly three years ago and I still regularly wear pieces from our very first collection.

Another benefit of sterling silver based jewellery is that even if the gold layer eventually fades years down the line, the piece itself still has value and longevity beneath the surface. Unlike cheap costume jewellery, it doesn’t simply become disposable and can be re-plated for a new lease of life.

Why We Believe Gold Vermeil Is Worth It

Fast fashion jewellery will always have its place, and for trend led styling it appeals to many people. But for customers looking for something longer lasting, more premium and ultimately less disposable, vermeil offers a very different experience.

Sterling silver gives jewellery a beautiful weight and feel in hand that cheaper base metals simply don’t replicate. It also allows for more intricate detailing and refined finishes.

For us, jewellery should feel luxurious, wearable and lasting without requiring solid gold pricing.

That’s why every L'ERA piece is crafted using 2.5 microns of 18ct gold vermeil over sterling silver, with free returns offered because we genuinely stand behind the quality and finish of our jewellery.

Once you understand the difference between standard gold plating and true vermeil, it becomes much easier to shop with confidence and know what you’re really paying for.
